Countdown to construction Construction on the new Redwoodtown Countdown is set to begin. Redwood Developments, the company that owns the Redwood Tavern, purchased the premises currently occupied by Redwood Countdown late last year. The new supermarket will create approximately 60 new jobs when it is completed early next year.

New supermarket ‘shot in the arm’ for Redwoodtown Continued from page 1 Chairman of directors Paul Ham says the purchase will enable RDL to proceed with the construction of the 3500 square-metre Countdown supermarket on the corner of Weld Street and Alabama Road. “Construction will begin following site works that are starting this week. “We’re hopeful that the new build will be completed by March 2016. “Following the opening of the new
supermarket the existing building will be refurbished and fitted out for other retail purposes. “The new supermarket and redevelopment of the existing supermarket building will give an overdue shot in the arm to the Redwood neighbourhood business district and benefit all of the existing business owners.” Mr Ham says Countdown is involved for the long-term, giving
RDL a significant anchor tenant. Countdown general manager for property Adrian Walker says the company is very pleased to be moving forward with plans for a new store. “We’re delighted to be able to expand and modernise our offer for our local Redwoodtown customers. “The store will feature Countdown’s latest new-generation design, including expanded aisles, energy
efficient fixtures and fittings and a full range of products. “Importantly, the new supermarket will also create approximately 60 new jobs in the community.” Robinson Construction have been awarded the contract, worth over $8 million, to build the new supermarket and car parks on the site. Phillip Robinson, principal of Robinson Construction, is also a director of RDL.
Boys’ College band takes flight Atom Flight, a three-piece from Marlborough Boys’ College, was named this year’s regional winner of Smokefreerockquest at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Saturday night. Guitarist Aidan Thomas performed in a duo last year and says being in a full band was a different experience this time. “We started playing together last year and we’ve been working up to this with band practices every weekend. “We’ve got to know each other really well and that really helps the gelling process.” Aidan says the band worked hard to get the crowd involved and planned to take their band to the next level. “Our songs were both quite different, with one having a pop-punk vibe and the other more hard rock, but we are going to keep doing what we do and mix it up a bit.” Atom Flight also won the people’s choice award, voted by text. The other members of Atom Flight
are Ryan Simmons (drums) and Robbie Miller (bass). Second place in the band category went to Traditional State from Marlborough Boys’ College. The members are Daniel Hurley (bass, vocals), George Young (guitar) and Jack McRae (drums.) Cam Dawson, a Year 11 student from Marlborough Boys’ College placed first in the solo/duo section. Cam was a Smokefreerockquest national finalist last year and says he has built on that experience and looks forward to doing it all again. Cam also won the Lowdown Best Song award. Aidan Quinn-Brereton performing as Kodum, from Queen Charlotte College placed second in the solo/ duo category. These four acts win musical gear from associate sponsors NZ Rockshops, and the opportunity to gain selection for the national final at Auckland’s Raye Freedman Centre on Friday September 11.

Man found Missing Wairau Valley man Brian Laycock was located by a police dog handler on Friday evening, after going missing earlier in the day. Before being reported missing by a family member the 73-year-old was last seen at an address about 46 kilometres up the Wairau Valley. He was admitted to Wairau Hospital for assessment.

Paddon scores career best with second place in Italy Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard have secured a history-making, career-best second place at this weekend’s Rally Italy Sardinia. Paddon and Kennard led the rally from the start of Friday’s action – the first New Zealanders to lead an overseas World Rally Championship event – and only relinquished that lead on Saturday afternoon’s loop after leading the rally outright for 15 stages. They delivered Sunday’s results exactly to plan, securing their fourth stage win of the rally and safely getting to the finish despite some niggles with their Hyundai i20 WRC car. For Kennard, this is the second time he’s stepped onto a WRC podium, the previous occasion being 27 years ago when he co-drove for the late Malcolm Stewart to secure third place in the 1988 running of Rally New Zealand, a round of the WRC drivers’ championship that year. He says the pair tried to stick to their plan as the pressure came on. “A few years ago we went back to the mentality of doing our own thing. We do the best we can do, and if that’s right or wrong, we can do something about it. “We did our thing and it happened to turn out quite well.”

Paddon says his first-ever WRC podium finish – the best result by a New Zealander in an overseas WRC rally – is a dream result. “To finish on the podium is an absolutely amazing feeling. Words can’t really do justice to how I’m feeling right now. “It’s been great to have such support from back home and I’m sorry they’ve had some late nights. I hope it’s been as worthwhile for them as it has been for us.”
Paddon and Kennard’s result surprised rally organisers who weren’t expecting to need a New Zealand flag for the podium presentation. A quick ask-around the assembled fans saw a New Zealand rally fan lend their flag to ensure the star Kiwis were properly represented on the surrounding flag poles. The next event for Paddon and Kennard is Rally Poland running from July 2-5.
Poppies dropped at Chunuk Bair Picton couple Robin and Olive Day have paid a poignant visit to the New Zealand memorial at Chunuk Bair, and have dropped a supply of Marlborough poppies off in the process. The couple made the trip as part of their European holiday, and placed about 200 paper poppies donated by the Marlborough community. Marlburians were invited to drop their poppies off at Mikey’s Bar, where Robin works as a
bartender. Olive says the trip was eyeopening. “It was a very memorable journey through the battlefields, trenches, and cemeteries of the Turks, Aussies and of course the Kiwis. To learn about what those poor guys fought through and gave for us, so that we would have the awesome world we live in today, was very touching.” Robin and Olive Day.

Why not Blenheim? Dear Ed, Many towns around the country have recently built bypasses or are building them. In the Waikato Cambridge is getting a big expensive bypass. Christchurch is making the bypass around by the airport larger. Taupo has a big bypass. So why not Blenheim? The need is so obvious. Is it included in the 10 year plan? Why is council so “head in the sand?” A bunch of ostriches? Or are staff running the show? Like the tail wagging the dog. When you see superficial highway work e.g. barriers on sides or the big roadworks south of Seddon that must have saved motorists 20 seconds. Amos Kitto

Constantly rising rates Dear Ed, Isn’t it marvellous - we ratepayers are expected to pay for the addition of ‘fluoride’ which is a poison, into our water system because parents are not being responsible for their children’s health. Tablets are a different formula and are ok. Also the council are at fault for there not being plastic bags in the receptacles for poor lazy dog owners (not all) to pick up their dog waste. Dear Ed, Falling foot traffic in the CBD, eh? Well isn’t it about time the selfish and covetous CBD retailers, who’ve been dictating to council too long how to set up the infrastructure of the Blenheim township, are put in place! Next time you’re waiting in a long line of frustrated commuters, truckers, and travellers trying to get a break in the traffic of the round-about (aka “merry-go-round” circus) on the main south railway lines of Main Street, just remember that it was the covetous CBD retailers who permanently screwed up the whole layout of “narrow street little” Blenheim for future generations. Fairfax is killing newspapers Les Whiteside started work at the Christchurch Star in 1973. As a publisher he purchased his first weekly newspaper The Ellesmere Guardian (CCNews) in 1986. Since then he has started The Northern Outlook in North Canterbury (twice weekly), the weekly Bay Harbour News in Christchurch and The Blenheim Sun in 2002. In April 2013 the NZ Herald approached Les to take over Wellington Suburban Newspapers. He has also worked for the CHCH Press, as part of their management team, and is a past president of the NZ Community Newspapers Association. By Les Whiteside After reading Leigh Maddison’s letter to the Marlborough Express editor last week and the Marlborough Express response I decided to weigh in with my opinion. Leigh’s letter hit the nail on the head, however the response she received from the Express was weak at best. For those who did not read Leigh’s letter which could account for two thirds of the Marlborough population, Leigh’s letter is below...
Local news coverage Dear Editor-less Marlborough Express, I read with great sadness the further editorial restructuring our local paper (and all the others) are facing in the coming months. I love the terminology being used - disestablishment of jobs (i.e. jobs canned) and jobs rescoped (usually means a drop in wages). Having journalists “no longer clustered around the company’s newspapers” means we will be reading a lot of stories from other areas and honestly that bores the hell out of me. Local papers used to be 30+ pages with strong advertising support and with news and features written by journalists based right there in the town. Blame the digital age all Fairfax may like but when you dumb down your staffing levels, pay poor money and have an unsteady career path, you lose good people, then good stories, followed by good advertising revenue. Take a moment to mourn the passing of your local news. The paper won’t be far behind. Leigh Maddison Blenheim. Colleagues and readers have asked
me before to comment in print and let our readers know what is happening with daily newspapers in New Zealand. Well the simple answer is they are self destructing. Fairfax CEO Greg Hywood from Australia said in 2013 at the INMA New York conference “The mass newspaper business which rode a technology called print for 500 years – a pretty good run – is in its last years. Heart warming stuff if you were an employee with Fairfax. I was privy to the creation of
STUFF on the internet in early 2001. The Christchurch Press (owned by INL and soon to be sold to Fairfax) were hell-bent on beating the New Zealand Herald to be the first news website in NZ. To my knowledge there was no business plan and really no idea of the impact STUFF would have on their daily newspapers. The new and younger Fairfax executives believed websites like STUFF would compliment newspapers. Without the daily newspapers advertising revenues and paid sub-
scriptions they would not have had the revenue to start such websites. The news, the newspapers once charged for and readers were happy to pay for, is now given away free on STUFF and other websites. Initially I am sure the intent from INL and then Fairfax was to charge for STUFF, but in the early days STUFF would not have got the traction it needed. The problem with all this, is there is no turning the clock back, and the Fairfax shareholders still expect dividends/profits. As Greg Hywood says “Fairfax

has made a commitment that we won’t run unprofitable papers – but in the end you’re left with the question – how do you know when it’s time to stop printing?” In my opinion social media has its place but it is not the be all and end all. I remember when television entered the media scene, it was said by some media experts newspapers would die. Yes evening daily newspapers have been replaced by free newspapers. But the major reason was evening dailies chased the same news as TV and forgot about local news in their own neighbourhood. That vaccum was filled with free community newspapers. Which have continued to grow. So getting back to Leigh’s letter, yes the reason for the layoffs at the Express is purely financial. No business gets rid of their general manager, editor and advertising manager in the same week. It is all about reducing costs. Staff levels at the Express have continued to be eroded, particularly the last two years. I remember a real estate advertiser telling me five years ago, he wouldn’t pull his advertising from the Express and put it in the Sun because the Express would have to layoff staff. Well the advertiser is still in the Express and they have probably laid off 60-70 staff. The Marlborough Express have laid off printers, production staff, designers, delivery people, delivery children, advertising staff, photographers, journalists and now senior management. There is a place for you National Volunteer Week is a fantastic chance to celebrate the invaluable knowledge, skills, and time contributions given by Marlborough’s past and present volunteers. This year’s theme is ‘there is a place for you to volunteer’ which highlights the diversity of volunteer opportunities, volunteers themselves and the impacts of volunteering. As a community, we recognise the critical impact all kinds of volunteering have within
communities. Volunteers should be appreciated, mobilised, motivated and encouraged during this
week and indeed year round. It is important to celebrate volunteerism and the place it has in keeping our communities strong and healthy. The week also provides the opportunity to encourage those who have not yet found their place in the volunteer community to seek it out and be aware that contributions can be both big and small. Regardless of how much or how little skills, time and experience one has to offer, there will always be a place to volunteer.
Hospice volunteers ‘wonderful’ Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Walking into Hospice Marlborough, people are immediately greeted with smiles and friendly greetings from volunteers. In fact, in nearly every aspect of Hospice Marlborough there are smiling volunteers working behind the scenes. Last year alone volunteers gave 17,135 and a quarter hours to Hospice Marlborough, making them much more than just a volunteer, but also ‘ambassadors at large’. There are more than 200 volunteers dedicating their time and skills to Hospice Marlborough, of that number 125 are active in a number of different roles and others can be called upon when needed. According to Hospice Marlborough volunteer co-ordinator and social worker Diane McMurtrie, all the organisation’s volunteers are considered ‘staff volunteers’. “Our volunteers are just wonderful people and we do what we can to make them feel appreciated. “We have volunteers helping in so many ways, from working at the Hospice charity shop to sitting with patients or making meals. Every contribution they make goes a long way, and in all honesty we would not be able to function without them,” she says. No matter what skill set a person may have, each volunteer is matched with a role they can feel comfortable doing. This could be sitting with patients, delivering and setting up equipment in the community, Wairau Hospital reception, helping in the inpatient unit, making meals or simply gardening. “Everyone has a skill to offer.

“We have a group of ladies who come in and do our flower arrangements each week, and another group of people who take turns helping with our day programme. “It’s a big deal what our volunteers do for us,” Diane says. For volunteer Pat Eatherley, it has been a labour of love since first volunteering five years ago. Today she volunteers on the reception desk and co-ordinates the weekly roster. “Some of the volunteers we have working on the desk have been here since Hospice first opened.
“What I personally enjoy the most is the way we are treated by staff, you feel good about coming in,” she says. Currently there is a shortage of volunteers in some areas. If you think you can spare some time to volunteer in the following areas, please contact Diane. • Sitters, sitting with patients in their homes and in the inpatient unit. • Equipment transport, suitable for retired men who can help deliver and pick up equipment.

Our volunteers add much to the quality of life we enjoy here in Marlborough. They give the hours and the energy that makes such a difference to our events, clubs, organisations and services. A fine example of this has been the way that volunteers from across our community helped to make our ANZAC ceremony so special this year. I’m pleased to be able to acknowledge all who gave a hand; from those who arranged and participated in our Last Post ceremonies to those who had a role, however small, in ensuring that ANZAC Day was a region-wide event of particular poignancy. Similarly, the increasingly successful cycling and marathon events for which Marlborough is making its name could
not happen without the small army of volunteers who are proud to help events that promote our region. I thank them all. Volunteers so often give their time without expecting recognition but I think it is important that we express thanks for the contribution they make in so many ways; from sports coaching, to helping those in need, through our arts and culture groups and through our service clubs. Stella’s Red Cross journey Stella Robb first volunteered for the New Zealand Red Cross when living in Christchurch and says from that first moment she was “addicted”. Today, she proudly holds the title of Marlborough branch president of the NZ Red Cross. Stella talks with reporter Celeste Lodewyk about her experiences and how valuable the role of volunteers is to an organisation such as Red Cross. With her background in health services, Stella says she always felt she had skills to offer as a volunteer and admired what the Red Cross stood for. After finishing work she took the first step toward volunteering and joined Canterbury’s Red Cross Area Council. Four days after being elected the first of Christchurch’s severe earthquakes hit in September 2010 which immediately threw Red Cross into action. In addition to helping with the Red Cross efforts, Stella also had to deal with having a badly damaged home. She later decided to make a fresh start and move to Marlborough and has now been here for three years. “When I came to Marlborough there was a need for a new president, so after attending some local
meetings I was approached to take on the role. “I was also asked to join the Area Council for Tasman/Marlborough region, and am still happily doing both roles,” she says. Stella says the first thing she noticed was the dedication of the Marlborough Red Cross members and the enjoyment they got out of helping others. “They are the type of people who truly enjoy helping others, are very supportive of one another and resourceful when something needs to be done,” she says. Nearly 300 volunteers are listed with the Marlborough Red Cross, whether it’s operating the Meals on Wheels, community companions, community transport, wheel chair hire service or the emergency response team. “We are hugely fortunate to have our wonderful volunteers to support everything we do here in Marlborough, and we are always happy to welcome more. “To someone thinking about becoming a Red Cross volunteer I would tell them that no matter what experience or training they may or may not have, take the plunge and you will receive so much back. “I have learned a great deal, met some truly wonderful people and made lifelong friends,” she says.

Local heroes sought Entries for the Trustpower Marlborough District Community Awards opened this week. This awards programme is run in partnership with the Marlborough District Council, and set up as an opportunity to recognise local voluntary groups’ contributions to their communities. Anyone can enter a voluntary group or organisation into the running, including volunteers themselves. Since the Trustpower Marlborough Community Awards began in 1999, $68,000 has been given away to deserving voluntary
groups in the region, and this year more than $5000 is up for grabs. Locals have until 5pm on Friday, August 14 to get entries in for this year’s awards. Entry forms are available from Council offices or service centres, or can be completed online at www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards, and on Trustpower’s Facebook page too. Warmth, no waste More than a quarter of New Zealand households have a heat pump but these heaters need to be used in a smart way to make houses warm and healthy, according to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. EECA ENERGYWISE Technical Expert Christian Hoerning says heat pumps are the most efficient electric heaters and there are simple tricks to avoid wasting energy. Mr Hoerning advises only heating the space you’re actually using, shutting doors and curtains to keep the heat in. He says the next step is learning to use the timer feature. “Don’t leave your heat pump on all day if you’re not there. You can set the unit to turn on half an hour or so before you get home or before you get up in the morning.” Using the timer will also avoid the common mistake of coming into a cold house and cranking up the heat pump to its highest setting, Mr Hoerning says. “Set the thermostat to a healthy temperature. Aim for a minimum of 18ºC while you are using a space (or 20ºC if you have children,

elderly or people who are unwell in the home) and 16ºC in bedrooms overnight.” Cleaning the heat pump filters regularly will also mean the heat pump runs more efficiently, Mr Hoerning says. If you are considering buying a heat pump, look for the blue ENERGY STAR® mark to identify superior energy efficiency. Like all heaters heat pumps can use a lot of energy so it pays to get an efficient model, Mr Hoerning says. “Some heat pumps also ice up if the
temperature falls to between 5 and 0°C. That’s why ENERGY STAR now includes a requirement that’s designed to ensure a correctly sized ENERGY STAR heat pump will perform efficiently in this temperature range.” Installation. Good installation is fundamental to how well a heat pump performs - make sure you choose an experienced installer who follows EECA’s Good Practice Guide – Heat Pump Installation.
Mould effects Does it affect your health? Yes, if you have damp and mould you are more likely to have respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma. Damp and mould can also affect the immune system. Moulds produce allergens (substances that can cause an allergic reaction), irritants and, sometimes, toxic substances. Inhaling or touching mould spores may cause an allergic reaction, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rash. Moulds can also cause asthma attacks. If you have mould or damp make sure your home is repaired or take steps to limit moisture in the air. If you have mould you may need to get a professional to remove it for you.

Don’t crack under winter While you use a scraper and de-icer on the outside of your car, starting the engine, switching on heated rear screen and mirrors and allowing air-conditioned air to circulate to gently warm the glass is the most effective way to clear frosted glass. • Stay with the car all the time - if you must go back indoors switch off and lock the car. • Do not drive off until all of the glass is clear. • Remember not to leave wipers in ‘auto’ when frost is expected - if wipers are frozen to the glass the wiper motor could be damaged. • Don’t try to force frozen wipers off the glass.
• Never use just-boiled water to clear glass – it could crack the glass, freezes quickly and could ice your wipers to the glass. • Clear all snow off the car, a soft brush is effective – making sure the front grille is clear (otherwise there is risk of the engine overheating). • Make sure lights are clean and working • Air conditioning isn’t only for summer - it will help to dry the air and keep cold glass mist free. • Don’t use your hands to wipe misted-up windows – you’ll leave greasy smears and a diamond ring could scratch the glass. Use a lint-free absorbent cloth if necessary.

Gymnasts vault into town By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough’s gymnasts will be joined by competitors from across the country at the Schools’ Gymnastic Festival and the Marlborough Gymnastics Championships this weekend. The Schools’ Festival is to be held on Friday, with over 800 children participating from schools throughout the Marlborough District. The Marlborough Gymnastics’ Champs is an event which attracts over 400 competitors from throughout New Zealand, from Wellington, Kapiti, Hutt Valley, Christchurch, Timaru, Waimate, Greymouth, Hokitika, Nelson and Marlborough. Blenheim’s Anna Tempero will be back competing in local colours. Anna is back to limited hours of training and will be competing in the Step 10 event. It is also the first of the qualifying events for those from Nelson, the West Coast and Marlborough vying for selection to the Top of the South provincial team, which heads to nationals in Auckland in October. On the Saturday and Sunday there will be a trial for the Men’s Artistic NZ team to the Japan Cup. Blenheim’s Matt Palmer, who retired from competitive gymnastics after competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and was a finalist in the rings event, will be coming down to judge at the event. The Schools’ Festival and the Championships will be held at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. For the Marlborough Gymnastics Championships there is a small door entry charge to help offset expenses.

Winemakers go green Pernod Ricard Winemakers staff took to Blenheim’s walking trails on Thursday, to help raise over $6500 for a local conservation project they will launch with Conservation Volunteers New Zealand. The walk took 110 of the staff away from their winemaking to complete the five kilometre Riverlands

New name for Church On Sunday, June 14, the Blenheim Assembly of God Church at 22 Nelson Street launched their name change with the congregation. The new name is ‘Harvestlife Church’. The church leadership team believed it was time for a name change. Community connection would be better served by finding a name the community could relate to. A name provides a ‘window’ to the church and so the process of name change began two years ago.

Every pearl, much like ourselves is unique No two are alike - all have some imperfections! I did enjoy Nikki’s previous article so I have asked her to do another ...Pam “A woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls” the exquisite Coco Chanel once said. I do tend to agree! Pearls easily qualify as the world’s oldest gem, cherished and collected by different cultures long before written history. Fragments of the oldest known pearl jewellery, found in the sarcophagus of a Persian Princess who died in 520BC, rest comfortably at the Louvre in Paris. Today natural pearls are extremely rare. Unlike the shatterproof diamond the formation of a natural pearl relies on clean seas and stable temperatures. Unfortunately both of these have been thrown into chaos by pollution and global warming. A close second to the natural pearl would be south sea pearls, coming from a much larger oyster than the one that produces the Akoya pearl, therefore making the pearl itself much larger. Because of the rarity and sensitivity of this particular oyster, cultivation of the pearls is much more difficult making them more expensive. Probably the most popular pearls are what we describe as “fresh water” pearls, grown in fresh water, lakes and ponds predominately in China. Many do resemble the Akoya cultured pearls in size and shape; however they can be produced in various shapes and colours, also usually grown in mussels. Whether it’s with a t-shirt and jeans or an elegant little black dress, pearls are certainly for every occasion and in store you can choose between a single drop or a luxurious rope and lose yourself in the elegance and warmth of their beauty. The existing name, Assembly of God, means much to those in the church but has little understanding of what it is for those in the community. Many possible names were considered. The name had to reflect the church’s vision, align with Biblical scripture, be understood by the community and be appealing to all generations. The church will still be part of the Assemblies of Denis and Ruth Humphreys outside Harvestlife Church. God NZ movement, but The church will still be have a local name, as do have a local name as do part of the Assemblies of many of the 230 churches many of the 230 churches God NZ movement, but in the movement in the movement.
Cheers to great beginnings Cheers to a great start to my Wedding Countdown ‘healthy journey’. I have decided to re-title this as my healthy journey after some fantastic feedback from Jane Butler of Out of the Rut, who pointed out that this is not about weight loss, but in fact about a pursuit of a healthier lifestyle. Jane has been very kind to me after reading my first article and offering to take me under her wing. She will be the person I will be accountable to, reporting back on a fortnightly basis what I have been doing, my measurements and weight. It was her suggestion that I set up a network of people who can give advice and treatment on various matters to ensure that I go about my journey in the healthiest and most sustainable way. So for the first time I have
signed up for an introductory yoga class that begins tonight with Trudy Hennessy who operates The Yoga Room. I have to admit I am looking forward to this as I do not allow myself time in my day to relax and unwind, so this will be a great opportunity. The second appointment I have made is with Emma Sell of Marlborough Osteopathic Services for a massage.
In the meantime while continuing to set up my network I have started jogging again, although only for short distances (my knees protested the first three times which would have looked hilarious to anyone driving past me). I have been well behaved in the chocolate department and have stuck closely to my healthy eating plan and I have to admit that the longer I continue this, the easier it is becoming. I have eased off the fruit juices and smoothies and am focusing more on healthy eating at regular intervals, with the positive of this being an increase in energy levels which my kids love. So no measurements this week as it was more about establishing a routine and finetuning my plan, but next fortnight will be the interesting one. Fingers crossed.

Masters in paradise The Marlborough rowers came away with six medals at the recent Masters in Paradise masters rowing regatta in Vanuatu. That haul included four gold medals. Cynthia de Joux took gold in the women’s single, and then combined with Sarah Lissaman to take out the women’s double, and Shane Rohloff to take the mixed double. De Joux, Lissaman, Renate Paschke and Veronica Best won the women’s quad event. Lissaman and Best also took thirds in the women’s single, while Paschke and Best were third in the women’s double.
The inaugural regatta was held at Erakor, a four-kilometre lagoon in Port Vila. About 70 rowers from New Zealand, Australia and Vanuatu took part, with about 30 spectators and officials making the trip to Vanuatu for the regatta. The regatta also served as a fundraiser for Ni-Vanuatu rowers. The Port Vila rowing club are hoping to send their top rowers to a regatta in New Zealand later this year, and help to qualify Vanuatu for the next year’s Olympics in The Marlborough contingent: Mouse Taylor (coach), Renate Paschke, Shane Rohloff, Cynthia de Joux, Lindsay Fraser, Sarah Lissaman and Rio de Janeiro. Speedway season a success By Adam Poulopoulos Eastern States Speedway president Frank Burns is delighted with the track’s 2014/15 season, but planning has already begun ahead of next season. Last season Eastern States hosted the New Zealand Saloon Championships, which saw local driver Paddy North take second. Burns says the event was well-run. “We had two days’ racing, and between 5000 and 7000 people in those two days, and by 9:30 each night racing was done. “A lot of drivers were really surprised. For a New Zealand champs that’s unheard of.” He says North, who also picked up the club’s highest achiever and sportsperson of the year awards, was the club’s standout driver. “He got 2NZ in Blenheim which was really nice...to fight through the repechage and get through to the final was great.” The past season also featured the inaugural Farmlands Gulf Oil Race Series, a threenight, nine-race series aimed at business houses which attracted 23 entries.

“It was very positive, everyone enjoyed it,” Burns says. “One guy contacted me last week and said he has four cars ready for next year. “It’s going to get big.” Burns also reported an increased number of drivers where many other clubs reported declines. In preparation for next season the club has flattened the infield, which will eventually be reshaped to aid with drainage and attract more sidecars, which need extra room around the track during the race. More grass is also being laid around the outside of the track, and the club is continuing to search for volunteers. The 2015-16 season will feature the ELF Super Cup for super saloons, the South Island Saloon Champs, a north v south super saloons meet and the return of the Farmlands series. Drivers start training in September before the first race night in October.

Marlborough-born Central Districts fast bowler Ben Wheeler took three wickets in his one-day international debut for the Black Caps against England on Monday morning. Finishing with 3-63 off his 10 overs, the left-armer’s first scalp was opener Alex Hales, who he had caught in the slips by Tim Southee. He returned near the end of the innings to have Sam Billings caught at short third man, before bowling Ben Stokes with a yorker. He was at the wicket when New Zealand hit the winning runs, finishing with three not out. New Zealand chased down 302 with three wickets and an over to spare to take a 2-1 lead in the ODI series. Wheeler was replacing Trent Boult, who has been ruled out of the tour with a back injury. The next match is at Trent Bridge tomorrow morning.
